Model 5 (late)

History:

In 1913, one year before start of World War One , Walther introduced his Model 5. This was mainly just a revival of Model 2, where but important construction-details like the magazine-safety or the automatic sight were cancelled. Appearently Walther decided this changes, because the automatic sight did not get the acceptance as expected and the production became more easy that way.
With this model Walter first time got success on the international market too.
Early types had a groove-type sight, which was replaced by a fixed front- and rear sight later on. Very early varitaion still bear the coarse serration of the Model 2, where it seems leftover parts have been used. It is also remarkable that there were barrels with 4 or 6 grooves existing.
Looking from outside it can be told from the Model 2 mainly by the fine serrations at the slide. In addition the serial-numbers are placed at the left side behind the trigger guard, where the Model 2 bears this number at the right front side of the trigger guard.
The pistol was made from 1913 up to around 1915, and existing pieces indicate, that there were three main blocks of numbers: 30000-110000 / 250000-270000 und 350000-390000, where especially the first range shared the numbers with other Models.
